Only problem with instrumental music is sometimes you miss out on great Robert Burns lyrics:
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
- CHORUS:
- For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
I never really knew what all that meant until a couple of my ViolinWOD students starting learning it for New Years. (Thanks Jami and Pete!) Then I realized what a great song it is.
Still love and relate to this little bit from Harry met Sally:
Harry: [about Auld Lang Syne] What does this song mean? My whole life, I don’t know what this song means. I mean, ‘Should old acquaintance be forgot’? Does that mean that we should forget old acquaintances, or does it mean if we happened to forget them, we should remember them, which is not possible because we already forgot?
Sally: Well, maybe it just means that we should remember that we forgot them or something. Anyway, it’s about old friends.
Can’t you imagine Billie Crystal and Meg Ryan saying those lines?
Anyway, Kelly and I had fun playing a holiday web concert for you guys and whipped up this fun little version of Auld Lang Syne:
We’ve got another web concert on the books and hope you can join us!
It’s Saturday Feb 11 at 1pm PST.
You can sign up and get a “ticket” (for whatever you’d like to pay…) right here:

In the meantime I’d love to hear about your New Years resolutions or goals.
Lemme know in the comments! 😀
My new year resolution is to learn to play the penny whistle, only because I developed cancer in my shoulder and can’t continue to learn the violin.
But music is music , love hearing you and Kelly play.
I’m sorry to hear about the shoulder. I have another friend who was in a similar situation in that a health condition combined with her violin playing to cause pain. She also took up the penny whistle and loves it! She calls herself the Hot Whistler. I’m hoping to share her story on the blog soon.
Jenny, you’re an inspiration. Keep it up
Hiya, that was great, Jenny and Kelly, no resolutions, been the same for three years, learn to play this most beautiful of instruments, hope you’re all good over there, righto, practise time, it’s 7am here in west oz, still hoping to catch up with you sometime in the future. Zoe.
Cheers Zoe, enjoy those etudes!
You two look pretty happy playing and i enjoy listening to your music. As for a resolution. Ive not done one since my grandmother passed some years ago not that ive had much luck with them. But she believed that if we had small packs of yew in our pockets that we would never ne with out money. I guess for some people it works. I was aleays broke. I do think that if your willing to keep a positive look upon such things and whatever you decide its to be and have the courage to follow it through then its worth having one. Thats my opinion on it. Perhaps next year I’ll give it another shot and see if its different. Happy new year to you and your family & friends
Hello Jenny. What you do and how you express your ability to keep learning and to inspire those around you and those that wish to learn violins is very impressive and I enjoy your music very much. The way you play it doesn’t come from the music you play but from your heart to allow it to flow out of you into this wonderful music that you create.
As for new year resolutions. I’ve not done one since my grandmother passed several years ago. Though pehaps one day I’ll teach my kids about it. For now i just don’t seem to get time to make one. I do think that they are a goal for people to try to make come true. It gives people the sence that they are and able to change themselves to strive for something better in their lives. And it also provides hope that can be up lifting or enlightment to their lives
And you thought you ramble on. Lol
May you all have a very happy and enjoyable year with nothing bad in it

I have been playing the Fiddle for 2.5 years, and I absolutely am obsessed with it. It is one the best things I have ever done for myself. My New Year’s Resolution is to play more scales. I don’t enjoy playing scales (they are kind of boring), but I know I must do them to improve my playing. So far, so good. I have played scales every day this year. Wish me luck!
Good luck on that Tim! I agree with you- those basics can seem like a grind at first. But then they can become really fun if you’re in the right state of mind, and especially when you start to see (hear) the results. Do you have a system or book for practicing scales, or just a general list of them? Please keep me posted on how it’s going!
I’m going to stop resisting (or get into an uncomfortable zone of) promoting myself in videos.
Congrats! I can relate to your goal!
Hello Jenny and Kelly thank you for the video and sheet music. I haven’t done a New Years resolution in many years. I typically just follow my nose and try not to over think things. Best wishes to you, your family and extended family.

I like that, thanks for sharing. 🙂
Hi Jenny and Kelly;
Thanks so much for sharing you skills. finally got around to taking a look at the site, it is awesome. Both my young daughters and I play violin and both you are our role models. I am so glad I found you.
