Some questions have been rolling in regarding the tune I’m playing in this video. The lilting main riff comes from a tune called The Gael written by Dougie MacLean, the Scottish fiddler. Trevor Jones adapted it for use in The Last of the Mohicans, adding those long slow notes that fit so sweetly over the riff when the two are played together, hence the soundtrack titles, Promontory or The Kiss.
Since I’m just one fiddle, I fancy imagining the sound of one part when I’m playing the other. You shouldn’t be able to hear that, but maybe it makes me dig in a little differently…

I’m a big fan of Dougie’s and have been for about 15 years. Glad to see someone give him a nod on this. When I saw your video before hitting play I thought I was going to get belly dance music, given your costume. That’s not what you played but I wasn’t disappointed. Just a thought, the music from the games Witcher and Witcher2 might suit you as well.
I think I remember that day.
I am mesmerized by this tune and hope to play it one day…thank you for sharing. Veronica

Hey Jenny! I came across the video last night and since then it has been playing on a loop. I’d really appreciate it if you could send the score across to me as well. Thanks a ton.

Done. 🙂
Hi, my name is Leandro, I´m from Venezuela, I´m 29 years old and I play the violin since I was 6 years old, I love the gypsy music, I love your songs so, I will be very grateful if I could have some of your sheet music, I already have sign up for the email list 🙂
I have loved that song since the first time I heard it in LotM. There are a few renditions up on iTunes but most fall like tin on my ears. Your interpretation is equally as moving as the original perhaps more so demonstrating how good it can be unplugged. Listening to this song I feel real regret for not continuing to practice the violin when a family moved put me in a school that had no orchestra. Well done and thanks.
David, If you regret putting the violin down, that’s a sure sign to pick it back up now! I’m beginning to think my mission is to spread the word that adults can learn violin.
Hi, I’m Karsten and I come from Germany! Have had a look on youtube your posts and found it quite cool, although I’m not really for the classic instruments! The way how you played the title, I was then very impressed , the clothes and the environment I was also pretty cool, because I have not seen it in the form! I’m not usually so, but I thought I would let you over there, so then, wish you all the best!
The Hot Violinist: “Promontory” – Love this, Jenny, as well as the other songs on your website (www.circapaleo.com). Would love to see a live performance. Your band would be a big hit at the Highland Games held each summer in Linville, NC at Grandfather Mtn — (see: http://www.grandfather.com/grandfather-mountain-highland-games-july-8-11/ ) ! AND you’d love the experience of the beautiful scenery and comraderie of the “gathering of the clans”. Many musical groups entertain there, and it has become a very popular annual event. Although I’m in S. Fla., I’d love to travel to see you perform there. ——- Wishing you peace, love and God’s blessings. — Patty
The YouTube video is gone!! It was fantastic…and it was the full length piece too. Can you get it back?

Jenny! como faco para obter os cds do Circa Paleo?
Thanks for the sheet music and advice on playing the last of the mohicans its still hard but getting there using a mandolin. Thanks once again Jenny
Do you dress like this often, or just at festivals? Only reason for the question, I love all of your outfits and I would like to not be dressed in todays designer clothes so much but feel odd about having something other than jeans and a t-shirt in public.
Once more, ‘go you!’, as the young of today say:]
Good fashion question- I can totally relate. Um… I mostly dress like this at festivals. I’m with you in that I prefer to wear something other than the normal modern clothes and I sometimes will mix my exotic stuff with jeans for every day wear in the real world. I’ve also found myself stuck in the groove of jeans and tshirts because sometimes I feel like wearing the stuff I like could be misinterpreted as a plea for attention. That’s probably the odd feeling you are talking about. I think if you feel compelled to express yourself or you simply like clothes that are out of the ordinary, you could just keep experimenting. Maybe you could find some new combinations that will make you comfortable in public, while also expressing your personal taste. Keep doing what makes you feel good!
I don’t think anyone could ever come close to that preformance, your age, sutle momement, extreme sexiness, clothing.. purely hypnotic. Took me to outer space, and I could could watch it over and over. Richmond, ky 10-14-12
Thanks a lot. Outerspace… I like that.
Hi Jenny, thanks for being so generous to share your music and your knowledge with us :), you are really a great violin player and an inspiration for me!! I do appreciate all your tips and I love the performance of the Gael, your video is really amazing, loved the dress and the magic atmosphere … you are like an Elf playing in a forest centuries ago!!! 🙂
when I watch it I feel soooo depressed as I realize that I will never be able to play it!!! I have been playing the violin for just a year and I know I still have everything to learn, but I am following all your tips and things are going better!! thanks again!!
Have you posted the videos for lessons 2-4 on the Gael? can you send me the sheet? thanks thanks thanks 🙂
You will be able to play this tune someday if you:
Stick with practicing the violin and don’t give up
Seek good instruction when needed
And make sure you have a good playable beginner violin
I still have some videos to post about how to play the tune- I will get on that right away:) and the music sheet should be in your inbox now.
Hello Jenny, thanks for song. I´m looking for music music sheet. Can you send me this piece?
Yes! I just sent it along. It seems my system for automatically sending the music sheet was down for a little while 🙂 Still figuring out this technology stuff
What is the mic that you use with your violin? I assume that that’s also some sort of a preamp it’s connected.
Thanks!
Harry.
I use the Bagg’s Bridge pickup made by L.R. Baggs. It comes already embedded in the wood of the bridge, so you have to have the bridge then shaped and installed on your violin by a trusty luthier. I then plug it into an AudioTechnica 4000 wireless transmitter, paired with the receiver that plugs directly into an Allen and Heath 22ZedFX mixing board with three band EQ. When I play in a venue where wireless is not needed, I use a Baggs Para DI as a preamp. Enjoy, Harry!
The “Last of the Mohicans” as performed by Circa Paleo is both lively and haunting at the same time. This performance fits perfectly with the other pieces on the album Tideland.
